What are the two types of hemorrhoids?
Internal Hemorrhoids:
Located inside the rectum, making them hard to see or feel without medical instruments.
Usually painless due to the lack of nerve endings in the area they are located.
External Hemorrhoids:
Located under the skin around the anus where there are many more pain-sensing nerves, so they are more likely to hurt and bleed.
Swelling or a hard lump around the anus can occur with the formation of a blood clot, leading to a painful condition called thrombosed external hemorrhoids.
What causes hemorrhoids?
Hemorrhoids are primarily caused by an increase in pressure in the lower rectum.
This can occur as a result of a number of reasons, like straining during bowel movements, chronic constipation or diarrhea, or sitting for prolonged periods, particularly on the toilet.
Are they common?
Hemorrhoids are a common condition that affects about half of all people by the age of 50. At that time, you’re most likely to develop them, but anyone of any age can develop hemorrhoids.
Who is at-risk?
Those who are obese, pregnant, or have a low-fiber diet are all at an increased risk for hemorrhoids. Advanced age also plays a role in developing them.
