Preventing varicose veins during pregnancy

Developing varicose veins in your legs during pregnancy is a very normal thing when you look at everything working against the body. For example, as the uterus grows, it puts increased force on the blood flow that travels to your legs. This causes veins to swell, thus leading to the enlarged veins. Additionally, spikes in progesterone make it more difficult for blood to make its way up the legs, too.

How to reduce your risk

Medical intervention is usually discouraged during pregnancy. Instead, try these methods to reduce your risk of developing varicose veins:

1. Elevate your legs at the end of the day

2. Limit the amount of time you spend on your feet

3. Wear compression stockings under your clothes. This is a very safe and effective method to combat these unsightly veins. The stockings encourage upward pressure that assists the legs to move blood back to the heart.
